You can bet nobody will be lining up to take Michael Kelly on in a music trivia competition anytime soon.
His encyclopedic knowledge on the subject, Australian music in particular, will be put to good use for his new project.
Mr Kelly's Mountains based Australian Internet Radio was launched in San Diego on Anzac Day.
The station features nothing but Australian music from the 50s up until today.
He has coupled his business acumen with a passion for Australian tunes to fund and almost single-handedly run the station.
A successful stockbroker for more than 30 years he decided he'd had enough and wanted to follow his lifelong dream.
Three years of hard work and $300,000 of his own money later the dream is now a reality.
Tapping into the rapidly emerging technology, there are grand plans to expand beyond the current base.
He is convinced it can become a successful money-making operation.
"This is going to be a winner because I don't like losing," he said.
Don’t be fooled by the fact the station is based in his own house in Wentworth Falls, Mr Kelly is deadly serious about doing things properly.
The good news for Mountains musicians is he is also passionate about supporting them.
“First choice is always the Blue Mountains artist. I’m a bit biased on that but . . . there’s so much talent,” he said.
With no on-air ads and no DJs there is a simple rule for what gets played on the station; it has to be Australian and it has to be good.
Until the big record companies agreed to supply music in recent days, Mr Kelly was purchasing all the music out of his own pocket.
A collection of over 6000 CDs and 4000 records goes some way to explaining why the original budget of $20,000 has blown out so dramatically.
The Anzac Day launch, held at the Australian owned and themed Bondi Bar in San Diego, has been a bonus for Mr Kelly in getting Australian Internet Radio to the American market.
The station’s web site has already had hits from 23 countries to go with the building Australian audience.
If Mr Kelly’s determination is anything to go by, that audience is sure to grow.
