Soccer plan kicks off

10/07/2008 4:27:00 PM
Preparations are under way on a master plan for Glenbrook’s Knapsack Park that will allow new facilities at the popular soccer ground.

Blue Mountains Soccer Club president Ian Monaghan recently hosted a morning tea with Ward 4 Clr Kevin Frappell, council’s general manager Phil Pinyon, Blue Mountains Sports Council co-ordinator Adrian Birbeck, Nepean District Soccer Football Association president Gary Davies and club sponsor Angela Lougheed to discuss preparation of a master plan.

“The club needs a master plan to be completed by council, in consultation with the club, to enable the club to have the planned new facilities in place by the club’s 50th birthday in 2014,” said Mr Monaghan.

Clr Frappell said “completing the master plan in the short term would be a very effective way of moving the facilities upgrade forward”.

Gary Davies welcomed the idea of a facilities upgrade, as there is a very strong growth pattern in the Mountains with soccer becoming a sport of choice for both children and their parents as adult sportspersons.

“In fact, they are considering the creation of an over 40s competition in the near future,” he said.

The meeting was a success with the master plan proposed for completion in the coming year. This will enable the club to source funding from local businesses, and State and Federal governments to enable the achievement of the 50th anniversary deadline. Any local sponsors wishing to be involved can contact Ian on 0400 489-807.

The meeting coincided with a very successful small-sided games gala day for the club’s Under 7 age group held on June 28. The small-sided games format is the Football Federation of Australia’s new generation skills based game introduced for the younger age groups.

Mr Monaghan extended thanks to all the club sponsors, prize donors and volunteers that helped to create a successful showcase of the club via the gala day, with the new format SSG for young players being played by very enthusiastic participants.

Donations for the gala prize draw were gratefully accepted from Bodyfit Fitness Centre Blaxland, Glenbrook Health Foods, Glenbrook Panthers, Lapstone Hotel, Deli Glenbrook, Glenbrook Newsagency, Professor’s Charcoal Chicken, Little Mounts Quality Meats and Blaxland Pharmacy.
