Tomahawk attack

7/05/2008 2:21:00 PM
A Katoomba man alleged to have attacked a local resident with a tomahawk appeared in Penrith Local Court on Monday charged with attempted murder.

Police say Paul Jeremy Newton, 37, seriously assaulted the 36-year-old man after he was allowed entry into the victim’s Sherman Avenue home at about 8pm on April 30.

The victim sustained a deep wound to the head after he was allegedly struck with a tomahawk in the attack.

Despite the blow, the resident managed to flee his assailant and seek help from a neighbour who rushed him to Katoomba Hospital. Police established a crime scene and began inquiries after the victim reported the incident on May 1.

Mr Newton presented himself at Katoomba Police Station on May 3, where he was arrested and questioned by police before being charged with attempted murder. He was refused bail and appeared at Penrith Local Court on May 5.

Mr Newton was due to appear by video link for mention at Penrith Local Court at the time of going to press (Tuesday morning, May 6).
